A new vision for the world’s oceans
The New Ocean Project is a global initiative to transform international fisheries governance to be science-based, equitable, and climate-adaptive.
The problem
Current ocean governance systems are systemically flawed, perpetuating inequities and biodiversity loss. Of the 900 marine migratory and straddling species recorded in the world, 40% are classified as Threatened with extinction by the IUCN Red List, do not have an assessment, or are Extinct. These transboundary species, which connect ecosystems, peoples and cultures, rely on robust governance and management frameworks to ensure their conservation and sustainable use.

Our Mission
We’re working to transform international fisheries governance by embedding science-based, ecosystem-based, and equity-driven approaches into the management of shared marine resources through the creation of an international coalition of States and stakeholders who bring this to the attention of the United Nations.
Our Vision
A new international governance framework that ensures the equitable, sustainable, and climate-adaptive management of migratory and straddling marine biodiversity.
Interdisciplinary by nature
We draw on expertise from ecology, oceanography, fisheries science, law, economics, political science, and social sciences to reimagine the ocean as a shared global commons essential to biodiversity and long-term resilience.
